Description
The Ferrari 308 is an instantly recognizable shape from Ferraris back catalogue. Highly produced by Ferrari standards, reliable and fast, and equally easy to use, it was a model that guaranteed Ferrari success through the very late seventies and into the eighties. It had a magical, four-camshaft V8 amidships and allowed a short boot behind it, with the spare wheel dominating the area between the front wheels.
Unknown to some, is that despite being a fully-fledged production model that was, like many earlier production Ferraris, built at Carrozzeria Scaglietti, the early versions were bodied in glass-fibre reinforced plastic. Keeping the weight low – 1050kg, was key in the early cars to ensuring that they not only performed, but also handled to a standard that would become a benchmark. ‘Vetroresina’ cars were built until June 1977, when Scaglietti switched to steel for durability, and accepted the 150kg penalty as a consequence. This car was released from Bond in February 1977, to be sold new to its first owner in Australia.
