Description

Knowing what we know today about Porsche, to think that the future was for a time destined to be based on the ‘transaxle’ models is somewhat difficult to imagine. The 924 was conceived originally to become a Volkswagen model, it was canned by VW management after a change in the senior ranks.

Always seeking the magic that would unlock the appeal in an entry-level sports car, Porsche seized an opportunity to engineer a car using components from its partners in engineering, Volkswagen and Audi, and made what became the 924 their own. A two-litre Audi engine, components from VW, and a unique body with a glass lift back, an agreement to build the car in the former NSU plant at Neckarsulm, and they were on the way. Or were they? Fuhrmann was resolute that the 911, with its old-fashioned air-cooled rear engine had to go, and plausibly, enhancing the 924’s image would’ve been high on the agenda. If there was ever an event that defined the company as stand from which to project their prowess, it was Le Mans, and the intent was that the 924 would make its mark there – the only thing they required was 400 examples of a suitably homologated weapon that could tackle the relevant class…

The 924 Carrera GT was born, and amalgamated a cocktail of interesting components to birth what would be the ultimate version of Porsche’s attempt at an entry level car for the seventies and eighties. It didn’t kill the 911, but it left its mark and this example, delivered new in the United Kingdom is one of them.
