Description
Launched in 1975, Rolls-Royce’s Camargue represented a break with tradition thanks to its avant-garde body designed by forward-thinking Paolo Martin at Pininfarina, the man who was also responsible for FIAT’s flagship 130 Coupe. It was Rolls Royce’ flagship model and the most expensive production car in the world when released (costing twice as much as the Silver Shadow). Just 534 cars were built between 1975 and 1986. It had advanced features, such as automatic air-conditioning, and a dashboard that resembled aircraft styling (paying homage to the Rolls-Royce’s long association with aviation). It was capable of 120 mph. From its release until today, the design remains controversial in Rolls-Royce circles, though more and more the design is being appreciated and accepted.
This particular car was delivered new in Brisbane in 1977 via York Motors. It was later owned by Sydney stockbroking personality Rene Rivkin and has been in Melbourne for more than 25 years. The current owner says that the car drives beautifully and its occupants all enjoy the ‘waftability’ of a Rolls-Royce motor car in spacious surroundings.
