Description
The Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren was a joint co-operative between Mercedes Benz and McLaren and was produced and sold between 2003 and 2009. It was fundamentally a production realisation of the 1999 Vision SLR Concept, which was inspired by the 1955 Mercedes 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe. During the period of development, Mercedes Benz acquired 40% of McLaren and established the formula one relationship, Mercedes becoming very involved with chassis and powertrain development for McLaren cars. The SLR McLaren utilises many active-aero functionalities, including a partially driver-adjustable air flap and a flat under tray – the reason for which the exhausts exit in the sides of the car, rather than at the rear.
The SLR uses a developed version of Mercedes Benz’ magnificent M113, all-aluminium, three valve per-cylinder V8 but – with a Lysholm Type, twin-screw Supercharger. It develops 617 horsepower and 780 Nm of torque. Interestingly, the supercharger will spin to 23000 rp/m!
